City A - Z
Yaounde was founded as an outpost in the late 19th century by German explorers. It served as a research station and helped to establish local trade opportunities with the Yaunde people.
A military garrison was stationed at the outpost in 1895 and that helped to foster growth. Today, Yaounde is home to 2.5 million people and continues to grow.
There are several places of interest to explore when visiting Yaounde. The Basilica that is dedicated to the Virgin Mary is built on the site of the first church that was constructed at the original settlement. The current building was dedicated in 2006 and the architecture offers clean, modern lines. Walking in the historical footsteps, however, makes for an intriguing, almost humbling experience.
The Blackitude Museum is an interesting tour as well. This ethnographic museum was created in 2000 and includes collections of the royal treasury that were received in 1982. Over 2,000 works of art are part of the permanent collection.
A small zoo in Mvog-Betsi is available as well, along with several nightclubs, pubs, and restaurants to enjoy.
Take a day to head over to Ape Action Africa during your stay in Yaounde. This non-profit organization rescues the Great Apes that are being threatened by hunting and deforestation. More than 300 primates are currently under its care and you can even work with them to create a self-volunteer placement for up to 3 months to help work with the primates if you wish.
Yaounde is a community where you can create your own holiday adventure. Plan your stay today for an incredible and rewarding experience.
