You’ll find Wolfsburg in the Lower Saxony region of Germany. It’s right on the Aller River and what makes this community unique is that it is the richest city in Germany thanks to its thriving automobile industry. Volkswagen calls this city home and it has the biggest car plant in the world located in Wolfsburg as well.

The Autostadt, which is right next to the auto plant, is a popular first stop during a visit to this city and features a number of exhibits about the local automobile trade. Customers can pick up their new cars there and factory tours are even possible. A visit to Wolfsburg doesn’t have to just be about the automobile industry and how it made this city rich, however, as you will soon see. If your plans include this city soon, then here are a few additional items to add to your list of things to see and do.

Wolfsburg Is Home To a Number of Historical Castles

One of the best things about this city is that it has always had a bit of an influence on the history of the region. That means there are a number of castles that were built around Wolfsburg to help protect local interests at the time. One of the best is the Schloss Wolfsburg, which is a Weser Renaissance castle that dates back to the 13th century. It’s the landmark of the city and its existence was first documented in 1302. There are two art museums inside and it is also home to the Stadt Museum.

For the classic medieval castle experience, you may also enjoy the Burg Neuhaus. It’s highlight is a 14th century moat that surrounds the castle and the property has been owned by the government since 1981.

Your final stop on the castle tour of Wolfsburg is the Schloss Fallersleben, which was completed in the year 1551. A museum is on the grounds today and the setting has a castle lake, and old church that is dedicated to St. Michael, and there’s an old brewery on the grounds that is still in operation. The museum focuses on German literature and democracy from the 19th century and gives a local day in the life portrayal. Some excavations of the foundation can also be seen, although they are covered in glass in order to protect them.

There Are Other Museums To See As Well

Wolfsburg might be considered a company town by many, but there are a number of additional museums that are worth seeing during your stay in the city. One of the best is Phaeno, which is based on science and physics exhibitions. There are over 300 different interactive exhibits for the whole family to enjoy in this beautiful glass and concrete building. You will find it, however, as part of the Autostadt.

So what else can you do at this famous location? The Autostadt also includes a planetarium, a water skiing resort, and a private art museum that specializes in modern art. The Kunst Museum opened in 1994 and features the artwork of Fernand Leger. Modern art exhibitions that include video, photography, and even painting over sculptures are routinely on display.

It is also important to remember that Wolfsburg is actually less than a century old, which means the only older portions of the city come from the estates that were there before Volkswagen began building up the town to support their industrial growth. The Hoffman Museum takes a look at the history of the region, not just the city, and gives a glimpse of the man who would write the lyrics of the German National Anthem. You’ll find it at the Fallersleben.

Are You Looking For Entertainment While in Wolfsburg?

A town that is wealthy is a town that is going to have some fantastic places to eat. When you step into the small Vini D’Italia Marrone, you’ll instantly know that you’ve found what you want. This tiny Italian place might look like a wine store from the outside, but don’t overlook the small eatery. Anipasti and salads are available during most hours and the daily lunch menu is pretty good as well. New specials happen daily, but if you want to eat here for dinner, plan for an early meal. It closes up shop at 8pm.

A visit to Germany isn’t complete without at least one visit to an authentic German beer hall. That’s exactly what Wolfsburg offers you with the Altes Brauhaus, which is close to the Fallersleben. The brew is fantastic, the foods is quite hearty, and you’ll get heaps of sauerkraut that will prevent you from having sour memories of your time in this city!

A final option for you to enjoy is the Aalto Bistro, which is part of the Culture House experience. It’s a laid back environment that features a number of different pasta and seafood options in an upscale way. When the weather is nice, you can dine outside and look out at the art museum if you prefer. The pizzas are delicious and the salads are constructed well and the prices are better than you’d expect.

Are You Ready To Explore Wolfsburg?

Whether you want to enjoy the experience of being freighted to the top of a 46 meter tall tower and down again like a new car or you want to get a hands-on look at modern science, Wolfsburg has a lot to offer visitors. From the modern marvels of the Autostadt to the ancient wonders of the castles that call this region home, there is always something new to see or do. That’s why an adventure to this city for your next holiday is such a great idea!

Use these ideas to plan your trip, make sure to linger in the perfect moments that you find, and Wolfsburg will become the place that you’ll want to visit time and time again
