Wagah

Located along the old Grand Trunk Road between Pakistan and India, Wagah is a border community that is the only regular crossing point between the two countries that is available to travelers.

Since vehicles from either side are not allowed in the neutral area between the borders, you’ll need to walk the border crossing. You’ll find porters, dressed in blue or green coats based on their nationality, helping to transport possessions from side to side.

What draws visitors to Wagah is the border ceremonies that take place every day. There is much pomp and circumstance that is followed with great precision on both sides of the border. The military parades are synced with both nations, creating a tradition that brings thousands out to see it regularly.

In recent years, further cultural events have been added to the ceremony. Folk dancing, a short cultural program, and other entertainment of various types helps to keep the festivities lively. The atmosphere is often jubilant and similar to what one would experience at an important sporting match.

Seating arrangements in Wagah can be complex and can be segregated by gender. Couples traveling should have a rendezvous plan after the ceremony in case officials separate them into different areas. Snacks are available at the entry gate and along the roadside.

Just 1 kilometer from the border is Sarhad, a small restaurant with Lahori and Amritsari dishes. Grab a bite to eat to complete the experience.
