Volgograd, which many grew up calling Stalingrad, has been an important industrial center for Russia. Found on the Volga River, it is a memorial to one of the largest and deadliest battles that has ever occurred in human history.
The Battle of Stalingrad lasted for 6 months, beginning in 1842. More than 2.2 million personnel fought during the battle, with more than 2 million casualties coming out of the conflict. A large memorial complex has been created to commemorate the event, with The Motherland Calls being the highlight of the experience.
The statue is installed in Mamayev Kurgan and is the tallest statue of a woman in the world without the height of a pedestal included. Standing at 52 meters tall, with her sword adding another 33 meters, there are 200 steps that lead up to the monument to symbolize the length of the battle.
Another memorial, Pavlov’s House, is named after a sergeant who commanded the platoon which seized the building and held it during the long battle. A portion of the brick façade from the destroyed structure stands next to a rebuilt apartment complex that is still in use today.
The Panorama Museum is another wonderful tour in Volga, providing artifacts from the war and a panoramic painting of the battlefield.
Additional sights to consider seeing in Volgograd include the local Synagogue, which was built in 1911; the All Saints Church with its golden domes; and the Kazan Cathedral with its traditional Russian architectural style and color. The Planetarium and Gerhardt Mill provide an interesting dynamic to a tour of the city as well.
