Travel to Verona

Situated on the shores of the Adige River, Verona is one of the most frequently visited cities in all of Italy.

It isn’t the largest community in Italy, having just a 250,000 in total population, but it does have the largest per capita conglomeration of artistic pleasures. A stroll through Verona will tempt you to see a stunning opera, incredible galleries, and perhaps even participate in one of the many festivals that seem to always fill the city’s streets.

The city itself has been listed as a World Heritage Site, something that most cities cannot boast. The founding of Verona remains a mystery of which many legends are told. It is known that Verona became part of the Roman empire as a colony in 89BC and its history stretches forth from that time. There are many pleasures to find in this ancient and beautiful city, old Verona contains an abundance of Roman architecture and monuments that are of such pristine quality that only Rome can truly rival it.

The Amphitheatre, the Roman Theatre, Ponte Pietra, the Arco dei Gavi and the Roman Bridge are all incredibly preserved and take you back two thousand years as you stroll through these ancient streets. As well as the fine Roman influence, you will also see handwork of the Venetians, with their ornately decorated palaces and the sensational artworks that hang in the Castelvecchio Museum.

Plan Your Visit For the Annual Opera Festival in Verona

One of the most stunning festivals the world over if the annual opera festival that is held in Verona. It is an extensive festival, starting in June and ending in September, which means you’ve got plenty of opportunities to experience it for yourself! What makes it so special is the combination of talent and atmosphere that is presented to the spectator. Held in an ancient Roman amphitheater, it is one of the best preserved relics of the ancient world there is.

If you can’t make it for the festival, don’t worry – you can still catch one of the many large scale operas that are held outside of the timing of the festival. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to catch anything during the winter months, so plan your trip accordingly!

A visit to the balcony

No trip to Verona would be complete without a trip to the areas in which this tale of true romance unfolded. The Capulet House – Casa di Giulietta – is a tower-shaped building which once belonged to the Dal Cappello family. In this thirteenth century courtyard you can see the famous balcony where Romeo and Juliet first professed their undying love for one another. The tunnel through which you entered the house is lined with love notes to Juliet from tourists from all over the world. Leave your heart here as Romeo did and await the reply of Juliet’s secretaries.

The Religious Relics Within This City Are Numerous

The presence of the Holy Roman Church throughout the centuries is present throughout Verona. The opportunities to tour ancient cathedrals, chapels, and monasteries is abundant and each one has its own unique offerings to provide. Perhaps you’d like to ring the bell from an 11th century tower? Or maybe you’d like to gaze upon the Romanesque pillars and arches of the Renaissance movement? It all can be done in one day or over the course of several depending on how many sites you wish to visit!

As you’re exploring these sites of religious antiquity, don’t forget to bring your camera along for the architectural wonders that gave this city the chance to become a World Heritage Site. Of particular note are the Ponte di Castel Vecchio and the Arco dei Gavi, both reflections of what this city meant to those who have called it home over the centuries.

The Arena

Standing out from the Piazza Bra, you will find the formidable yet impressive Arena. Here, the Romans would have cheered on everything from theatrical performances to gladiatorial battles. The third largest structure of its kind in Italy, Verona’s Arena is a truly remarkable monument to one of the most powerful ancient Empires of all time.

Lake Garda

While the city itself makes the flight to Verona more than worthwhile, its location in the Italian Lake District means it has more to offer – ideal if you’ll be spending longer than a few days here. Lake Garda is around a 30 minute train journey from the city, so it’s easy to reach the countryside if you fancy a few days away from the urban hubbub. Lake Garda is the largest of Italy’s lakes and is a wonderful place for all kinds of outdoor activities, from hiking and cycling to sailing and climbing. It has a temperate Mediterranean climate, which makes it a popular place to visit at any time of the year. As well as its glorious outdoor spaces, Lake Garda boasts numerous towns and cities that are wonderful to explore. Gardone Riviera, Castelnuovo del Garda, Desenzano del Garda, Salo and Arco are just a handful of the places you can visit after arriving on a flight to Verona. There are also some excellent spas here, where thermal springs provide a natural rejuvenation and modern wellness facilities have been developed so you can be pampered before you fly home.
