Travel to Tunis

Tunis has the perfect location, situated along a deep gulf right on the Mediterranean Sea. Many people are automatically attracted to the medina of Tunis, which can be found at the very center of the city. It’s filled with intense aromas, a boisterous marketplace, dense alleyways that have covered passages sprinkled in here and there, and plenty of goods to pick through as you enjoy the life of the city. Go through the Sea Gate, or the Bab el Bahr, and you’ll enter the modern city.

After you spend time in the medina, you’ll likely want to fill out the rest of your trip to Tunis with a few other activities. Here are our suggestions to help you enjoy the essential Tunis experience!

Culture Is Always On Display In Tunis

One of the best times to visit Tunis is in July and August. Although it is often avoided because of the warmer temperatures, it is also the time that the Carthage International Festival takes place. In 2014, this festival will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and you can find many of the events held at the old amphitheater of Carthage. It seats 7,500 people and you’ll get to enjoy dancing, singing, and film in this outdoor location.

If you haven’t come from the festival, then you’ll likely be attracted by the many large parks that this city has to offer. The best and largest park, with is Belvedere Park, was founded in the 19th century and is the oldest public park in Tunisia. It overlooks Lake Tunis and is built in a style that is reminiscent of the French landscape style that was popular at the time. It’s 100 hectares in size, so you may wish to explore it by car more than by foot.

Tunis Has Some Spectacular Landmarks!

If you want to explore the essential Tunis, then including the Bardo Museum onto your itinerary is something that you must do. It was originally a Hafsid palace that dates back to the 13th century and it has an extensive collection that reflects the ancient cultures of the world, from Rome to Greece to the Arab period. The ruins of Carthage are nearby as well and these have over 3,000 years of history that can be easily accessed thanks to the development of the site.

You also will need to visit the various souks, or markets, that Tunis has to offer to get a real feel for the city. Outside of the medina, you’ll find places where you can pick out fresh produce or catches of the day. You might find a booth outside the ancient city that sells wears made completely of copper. The alleys are often a great place to shop, but make sure you’re ready to haggle because that’s expected of you!

Are you ready to visit Tunis today? This beautiful city is filled with adventure, fashion, and history, making it the perfect place to plan a holiday of any length. This city has the ability to speak directly to your soul if you allow it, but the only way to experience this is to plan your visit today.
