Taba Travel Wiki
Travel to Taba
Located along the border of Israel, right at the tip of the Gulf of Aqaba, sits the city of Taba. It’s the busiest border crossing between the two countries, which is pretty impressive considering it’s basically just a luxury hotel, a casino, and a bus station all rolled into one. How could something so simple become one of the most frequented vacation spots in all of Egypt? Part of the reason is because the area has been developed as a resort. Taba Heights is a well-planned holiday resort located twenty km south of Taba where the Sinai mountain range provides a spectacular backdrop to the sparkling blue waters of the Red Sea.
Go Snorkeling. Go Diving. Go On the Water.
Being in a resort community does have its advantages. You don’t have to pack all of your scuba gear, for example, or you can pick up a free toothbrush if you forgot yours at home. When you get into Taba Heights, you can also rent the gear that you need to enjoy some time out on the water. Want to go snorkeling to see some of the coral reefs in the Gulf? Done! Want to take a day trip to go diving? Done! Want to rent some jetskis or a boat to go out onto the water on your own? That can be done too!
To really get a great view of the area, another activity to try would be parasailing. There are rarely any rainstorms in the area, so every day is a good day to get up into the air to see the area from way up high. If you prefer a more land-based adventure, you can also rent some dirt bikes or quads and go out into the desert with a guide for a half-day trip.
Taba Heights serves as a hub for various local excursions. You will enjoy a visit to the 6th century famous Monastery of St. Catherine; it was built under the Roman Emperor Justinian over what was known as the place of Moses’ Burning Bush. You can go up Mount Sinai or Mountain of Moses on camel caravans, or take the hard way of climbing up the 3000 steps carved into the rock by monks.
The amazing Colored Canyon, 70 km southwest of Taba, is accessible by car and is ideal for a hiking expedition. It is a maze of sandstone rocks mineralized and stained in a variety of ways by water over thousands of years. There are narrow, twisting paths formed into the rocks, surrounded by spectacular 60 meter cliffs with narrow slots, beautiful sculptured walls and cliffs made of sandstone; they have amazing layers of colors such as pink, purple, silver and gold.
Just 5 km southeast of Taba, the Rocky island of Pharaoh (Geziret Faraum) and Salah El Din Citadel depicts ruins of a 12thcentury crusaders’ fort. You can dive in a maze of reefs and also enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the coast of Arabia, Jordan and Israel from here. Animal enthusiast will enjoy visits to the National Park of Nabq and National Park of Ras Abu Galum which shelters an abundance of animal life.
You Can Plan Out Day Trips From Taba Too
If the games just aren’t going your way in the casino, then there are a few day trips that you can take from Taba into either Egypt or Israel depending on your preference. One of the best is the trip to Jerusalem that will let you see the city that is at the center of the three monotheistic religions. This is a guided tour and you’ll need your paperwork with you for the border crossing, but for a small investment you’ll also get drinks and meals for the drip. The Dead Sea, Cairo, and Mount Sinai are also common day trips that you’ll find organized by the resorts.
If you really just want a slow day with all the luxuries of home, then you can just lay out by one of the pools at one of the resorts. Send for a few drinks, enjoy the sound of the crashing waves, and then maybe send out for a few more drinks. With everything provided for you, it’s hard to overlook how relaxing such an afternoon could be! Are you getting ready to visit Taba soon? Then these suggestions can help you get the most out of your trip there so that your holiday is a good one. Whether you want to be out on the water or just relaxing pool side, there’s always something that can be found to do in Taba today!
