Located in the Andalusia region of Spain, just a short drive from Huelva, the community of Sanlucar de Guadiana offers you beautiful vistas along the Guadiana River, access to the restored San Marcos Castle, and views of Alcoutim across the river and deeper into Portugal.

A passenger ferry can take you into Alcoutim, but to drive there requires a 70km trip one-way. If you are in a hurry you can go to Alcoutim in 50 seconds on the zipwire 🙂

Historically, Sanlucar de Guadiana has been a strategic port, despite its overall small size. From here, rice, soap, sugar, and liquor have found new homes with the emphasis on exportation. Local fishermen still export their catch from this river port, though today you’ll find more pleasure crafts and anchored boats than in the past.

The area was first settled in the early 15th century and the village and the Portuguese and Spanish have traded ownership of the area several times in history. Much of the village had to be rebuilt after extensive flooding in 1823 destroyed almost half of the homes in the town. The castle had to be used as a refuge during the entire restoration period.

While taking a stroll through Sanlucar de Guadiana, you’ll want to stop at the Church of Our Lady of Flowers. This parish church offers a celebratory festival during Easter weekend that takes place over the course of 4 days. On the final day, the image of Senora de la Rabida is carried on the shoulders of local men as dancers escort them to the church.

A stay in Sanulcar de Guadiana also puts you within 50 kilometers of the coast and its resort opportunities. With so many choices available, it is easy to see why this small village is such a tempting destination.
