Travel to Sandefjord

Read about and get inspiration for a trip to the city, check for the cheapest flights and hotels in Sandefjord

Known for a rich history of Viking culture and a prosperous whaling industry, Sandefjord at one time was the richest city in all of Norway.  It’s still doing pretty good and is home to the country’s third-largest merchant fleet. One of the most important artifacts from the Viking age was discovered in this community, the Gokstad Ship, which you can see in Oslo later on if you want at the Viking Ship Museum.

The community has even been known as a health resort back in the day! Do your plans include Sandefjord in the near future? If you do, then here are a few suggestions to help you enjoy your trip to the fullest!

Sandefjord Is All About Whaling

No matter what your feelings are about whaling, the fact remains that this community continues to thrive because of this industry. Not only will you find a whaling museum that is vast and thorough in its documentation of the how the city has benefited over the years [and it’s the only whaling museum that you can find in Europe], but you’ll also find the restaurant called Kokeriet, which is one of only a handful of places in the world that serves whale meat regularly on its menu.

On a beautiful day, the location of Sandefjord works to your advantage because there are nearly 150 kilometers of coastline to explore. There are a number of sandy beaches that will give you a time to relax during the summer months, along with a number of islets and skerries. Sloping rocks are a trademark of the region, so rock climbing is possible as well.

How About a Tour of an Old Whaling Ship?

One of the unique museums in Sandefjord is the Southern Actor, which is an old whaling ship that was originally built in 1950. The ship was fully restored in 1995 to an authentic condition and is in working order. That means you can take a tour of this museum… or you can charter it and go out to sea on the ship if you want as well.

As you’re out enjoying the fresh air, be sure to stroll on down the Jernbanealléen to find a number of hidden gems that will help you bring back some memories. There are a  number of shops on the street that you’ll enjoy browsing through and be sure to keep a list of the restaurants that you want to try out while you’re in town! You’ll even find one of the highest rated gourmet restaurants in the entire country there as well. Are you going to be in Sandefjord soon? Be sure to include these ideas with your own so you can have an outstanding time in this beautiful, welcoming city. It really is a place that will warm your heart!
