Travel to Salerno

The melting pot of Campania is easily Salerno. Three distinct zones make up this community, including a Medieval sector, 19th century sector, and then a post-war era community that is mostly a residential part of the city. The highlight of a visit is exploring the 5 mile long seafront promenade that was built in the 1950s and has numerous palm trees that draw the eye straight to the mountains beyond.

Arechis’ Castle is a massive complex that was built in the 8th century and is still used today. Visit one of the exhibitions that are regularly held there or just make your way up to the hill summit to see a complete view of the city. Don’t forget to make time for a visit to Minerva’s Garden to enjoy the first European botanical garden that was created.

If you prefer a stroll around ruins, the Etruscans and Samnites in Fratte is on the eastern outskirts of the city and it has a very large necropolis to explore. It’s the southernmost known ruins of its type in the country.

Salerno is also considered a religious pilgrimage for some as the Cathedral is said to be the tomb of Matthew, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. The Chiesa di San Pietro is an under-rated site to visit, but the Renaissance paintings will make it worthwhile. You’ll find it at Portanova Square.

High speed rail and motorways help to connect Salerno to the rest of Italy, but it is the port that is the busiest component of life here. 10 million tons of cargo come through the port per year, supporting the pottery industry that thrives here. You will thrive here too with a visit to Salerno. Once home to the oldest medical school in the world, the foundations of history have created a city that is full of life and wonder that is incredibly fun to explore.
