The Federated States of Micronesia, or FSM if one prefers, is a sovereign nation and an associated state of the United States.
It consists of 4 states in total: Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk, and Yap, from east to west respectively. About 600 islands make up this nation, located south of the Marianas, but northeast of New Guinea.
Unlike other tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean, the islands of Micronesia are relatively remote. That has made the infrastructure for tourism fall behind what one might expect on islands of similar grace and beauty. On the other hand, you will struggle to find a more authentic island experience than what is available in FSM as well.
For those considering a resort stay during their holiday, there are a handful of resorts that can be found on the major islands. They are small, sometimes with only 18 rooms, but swimming pools, air conditioning, and restaurant access become part of the stay. One unique option is the Kosrae Nautilus Resort, which has 3 acres of beautiful gardens to explore during your stay.
Popular activities while visiting the islands include swimming and diving. Some limited surfing and snorkeling are possible as well. The local culture has maintained a strong presence throughout the community over the years, so immersing oneself into their unique perspective of life can be a profound experience. There really is something to be said about living life on “island time.”
The Federated States of Micronesia have similar entry requirements to those of the United States, which includes a valid passport or similar document. Entry permits may also be required. Yet, despite the challenges, FSM is an incredible destination that is well worth exploring.
