Molde, on Romsdal Peninsula, is a city that has received the nickname the “Tow of Roses” because of its temperate climate that makes growing these beautiful flowers an easy prospect. The origins of this town date back to the Middle Ages when the area served as a trading post and has grown thanks to the emphasis on textiles and garment production.
If you’re headed to Molde, you must take some time to do some fishing in the area. Salmon and trout are abundant in the rivers and lakes, while cod, pollock, and mackeral can be found in the surrounding fjords. There’s a lot more that Molde has to offer as well. Are you ready to go exploring?
Journey Along the Atlantic Road
The Atlantic Road is one of the most ingenious engineering accomplishments in all of Norway. It’s technically a stretch of CR 64, but it runs along the Atlantic archipelago and stretches across a series of bridges, viaducts, and causeways that leads to some historical sites. One of the best sights to see along this road is the Kvernes stave church, which was the place where a treaty was signed between King Magnus I and the coastal farmers in the 11th century.
Why settle for just a day of exploring by road when you could also explore by air as well? There are a number of rock climbing opportunities that can be found in the area, and as the seasons turn colder this turns into ice climbing and glacier activities as well. Basejumping is a popular option around the fjords and there are groomed and rustic trails all around the area. Skiing is always a good option when the snow flies too!
What About Seeing One of the Highest Waterfalls In the World?
One of the must-see features of Molde is Mardalsfossen. It’s the highest waterfall in Northern Europe and it’s the 4th highest waterfall known in the world today. The total height of the waterfall is 655 meters, or nearly 2,200 feet. For a unique waterfall experience, journey over to the Troll Church, which is a marble grotto that leads to an underground waterfall. The hike is a bit steep, so make sure you bring good hiking equipment for this trail that’s about 30 minutes outside of Molde.
If you really want a good outdoor adventure, then be brave and climb the Trollveggen. It’s the tallest vertical overhanging mountain face in all of Europe. There are a number of difficult climbing routes that will take you up to the summit, but you’ll need to be in good climbing shape to do them. Many love to drive the Trollstigen, which has almost a dozen hairpin bends as it journeys up the vertical mountainside as it climbs over 850 meters.
A trip to Molde is all about exploration and getting back in touch with nature. If your travel plans are going to take you here soon, then add these adventures to your trip and you’re certain to have a fantastic time!
