Travel to Mexicali

Mexicali is a unique border community found in Northern Mexico. It shares a metropolitan area with the California city of Calexico. Because the Mexican side has a lower legal drinking age than the American side, you’ll find that weekends in the city tend to be lively, energetic, and plenty of fun.

What sets Mexicali apart is its music scene. Progressive rock was developed in the city and one of the genre’s most important events, Baja Prog, has been hosted here annually since 1997.

From a tourism standpoint, Mexicali provides some of the basics that most other communities offer, such as bowling, cinemas, museums, and a zoo. There are a couple of casinos that you’ll find at the Galerias del Valle, along with the typical stores you’d find in any other mall in the world today.

What distinctive element that you’ll find in Mexicali is the influence of the Chinese culture. At one point, the city claimed to have the largest concentration of Chinese families in Mexico. They originally came to the region as laborers for the local irrigation system. Monuments to their work are found throughout the city and you’ll find several excellent Chinese restaurants worth trying.

Yet a stay in Mexicali always comes back to the nightlife. There are concerts held frequently. Dance clubs of almost every type can be found. Grab a beer, dance in the cool evening, and then repeat every day. You will find it to be an exhilarating experience.
