Travel to Luxor

Luxor is a city that is located in the southern part of Egypt and is a popular place to visit because it is the location of the ancient city of Thebes. In many ways, a visit to this city is like walking through the world’s largest open air museum. There are massive ancient Egyptian sculptures and monuments on display because the ruins of the temple complexes are actually incorporated into the modern city.

If you’re ready to explore the city of Amon-Ra, the ancient Egyptian god, then there are a few essentials to do during your visit to make sure you get the full experience this city can provide. Let’s take a look!

The Highlights of the East Bank

You could fill an entire trip to Luxor on just one bank of the Nile, but you’ve got two full banks of monuments to explore. On the East Bank, you’ve got the primary Luxor Temple which was used by the Roman government and has been known as a legendary fortress. The Karnak Temple is also on the East Bank and you’ll explore numerous pylons, chapels, and temples that still have the hieroglyphics legibly carved into them.

After you’ve explored the ancient sites, there are a few museums that are dedicated to the sites that are worth exploring as well. The most unique museum on the East Bank, however, is the Mummification Museum. It’s north of the Luxor Temple and shows visitors how the mummification process was applied during ancient times. You’ll also see mummies of fish, crocodiles, and cats in this very unique museum. Best of all, there’s a cafeteria on the grounds so you can grab a bite to eat if you want too. Make sure to say hello to Masaharta before you leave!

The Highlights of the West Bank

Going over to the West Bank means you’ll be visiting the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. It’s where the nobility of Egypt were buried over the years and new tombs are being found consistently in the area. There’s also the Ramesseum to visit, which is a memorial temple to RamessessI II. Although the site is more of a ruins than a preserved area, there are still some amazing things to see, including the Osirid statutes that stand guard over the entrance to the facility.

Visiting the Colossi of Memnon is one of the less popular places to visit on the West Bank, but it is also one of the most historic. It features two huge stone statues of Amenhotep III and they have been in that place for over 3,400 years according to modern dating methods. Their job is simple: to guard the Theban necropolis. The side panels of the statues feature images of Hapi and have legible heiroglyphics, carved there by human hands nearly 4 millennia ago.

Are you visiting Luxor in the near future? If you are, then be sure to include these highlights into your trip so you can really get a feel for the history of this site. Ancient Egypt may be long gone as an empire, but its influence still remains. You’ll feel that influence the moment you walk these grounds.
