Travel to Lombok

While the majority of travellers to this part of the world head to Bali, Lombok offers a wonderful vacation experience for holiday-makers of all ages. One of Indonesia’s most impressive islands, the majority of visitors tend to stay on the west coast, partly because this area has the most developed tourist infrastructure.

The climate is wonderful and the beaches are among the most attractive in the world. There is a great choice of activities to enjoy during the day, and when the sun goes down you can enjoy everything from a quiet romantic meal for two to a full-on party in one of the many buzzing clubs and bars

If you want to savour everything that Lombok has to offer, you should look to make your base on the west coast of the island. This is where most visitors tend to congregate, and where you’ll find the widest choice of accommodation. The capital of Mataram is a popular choice, but if you head slightly north to Senggigi you’re likely to find more of a holiday atmosphere.

A more isolated, but no less enjoyable, option is available on the Gili Islands, a collection of three islands just off the north-west coast. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air have become increasingly popular in recent years, but they are still relatively quiet and relaxing.

Best of Lombok

What to see and do in Lombok ?

This part of the world can rightly claim to host some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet, and the one at Tanjung Aan could very well be the best of the lot. The white sands and clear turquoise waters offer a day of relaxation like no other, and it’s often pleasingly quiet. Many people plan to visit for an hour or so and end up staying for far longer.

Hiking is a popular activity, and for many visitors a holiday to Lombok wouldn’t be complete without an invigorating walk through the local countryside. Cooler temperatures are available inland, and this can be a blessing when the sun is at its fiercest. In the foothills of Mount Rinjani you will find a number of charming spots where you can rest awhile and take in the spectacular views. Perhaps the prettiest of all of them is Tetebatu.

If you plan a visit to the south coast during your visit to Lombok, you might want to try the local surfing. Kuta, like its namesake in Bali, is a popular destination with a lively community of both home-based and visiting surfers. Although there are waves which are suitable for all levels, the more experienced wave riders will usually head to Mawi or Ekas Bay.

For many people, a holiday to Lombok simply has to feature a little retail therapy, and while there are plenty of charming market stalls and independent stores on the island the best place to shop has to be the Cakranegara district of Mataram. Roadside food stalls will tempt your taste buds as you walk along, so make sure you stop for a sample every once in a while.

Scuba diving is a popular activity on Lombok, as well as on the Gili Islands, so check out the undersea world during your stay. If you’re an experienced diver, you may want to visit Sekotong Bay on the south-west of the island, because the coral reefs are particularly beautiful.
