If you’ve ever wanted to visit Switzerland and experience its culture in an authentic way, then you must consider a stay in Locarno.

It’s in the Ticino canton, right at the tip of Lake Maggiore, but also near the Alps that guard this small community. With historical roots in the Roman Empire, here are a few of the many fun things you can do doing your stay.

Locarno’s Castles

Trade along the lake allowed Locarno to flourish as a community historically. Because of this, there are several castles found around this community, some which date back to 1156. Visconti Castle tends to be a favorite, especially since it houses the city’s museum and the local archeological museum.

The Astrovia

This is a rather large scale model of the solar system that has been combined with a bicycling path which runs alongside the Maggia River. The total trail from the sun to Pluto is about 6 kilometers in length.

The Madonna del Sasso

This sanctuary, which is situated above the city, is one of the principal reasons why visitors come to Locarno in the first place. A cable car and a chair lift can take you up to the summit where the sanctuary sits. It’s worth the trip just so you can enjoy the view at 1,671 meters.

Locarno offers visitors a traditional Swiss experience, but with a local twist thanks to its unique culture that will always have you wanted to come back. With quaint little shops, cozy restaurants, and a view that is second-to-none, you’ll want to see this community for yourself.
