Tourist information, guides, as well as search possibility for cheapest travel offers and hotel deals. Get the best and cheapest vacation.

Travel to Iquique

Iquique was founded in the 16th century, but didn’t begin to grow into a modern community until the saltpeter mining in the region began to take off in earnest. It is one of just two free ports in Chile. You’ll also find plenty of beaches to enjoy, regional sites to explore, and stunning museums to tour.

Begin your journey at the Playa Cavancha. It’s the only beach in the city that is suitable for swimming. The waves are large enough for surfing if you wish as well. It’s rustic enough that shell or agate hunters will enjoy a leisurely stroll, but developed enough that you can find structured activities to enjoy. The crowds can be large, especially on a good day for surfing, so plan on getting there early.

Then make your way over to the Corbeta Esmeralda Museum. This tall ship takes visitors through the Battle of Iquique in the late 19th century, which would eventually see the city move from being part of Peru to being in Chile. The ship is well-maintained, but groups must schedule a tour in advance.

At the Plaza Arturo Prat, you’ll find a clock tower that is a designated historic landmark. Completed in 1878, the mechanism still functions and was imported from England.

You’ll also find water parks, historic religious sites, and a fascinating military museum waiting to be explored during your stay.

Iquique is a brilliant city that introduces travelers to the wonders of Chile and South America. Make it your next destination and you will be pleasantly surprised by the sheer variety of opportunities that are available here.
