Travel to Haugesund
Read about and get inspiration for a trip to the city, check for the cheapest flights and hotels in Haugesund
Founded in 1855, Haugesund was actually initially part of Torvastad. When the town was divided, the population only had about 1,000 people in total living in the new town. It’s named after the local strait that is an important part of Norway’s system of shipping, but you’ll quickly find that the international jazz and film festivals the community holds bring with it a large dose of culture that is both entertaining and inspirational.
It’s off the beaten path and the average person isn’t going to make their way here outside of a festival, but there are some notable things to enjoy during your stay here. What could a holiday in Haugesund offer you? Let’s take a look!
Spend a Day Exploring Karmøy Island
With artifacts that date back to the stone age, Karmøy Island, which is just south of Haugesund, was known in ancient times as a place for sailing. The ocean waters around the island are extremely dangerous, which means a number of lighthouses needed to be placed on the island to protect ships and sailors. There are four lighthouses to see with a visit here and all of them are worth a visit, though not all of them are open to the public.
While staying on Karmøy Island, you’ll want to take some time to enjoy the heather moors and the surfing beaches when the weather is nice. There’s something wonderful about enjoying a sandy beach on a warm day because it is peaceful, relaxing, yet still a bit adventurous thanks to the tides that surround the island.
Finish off your day trip to Karmøy with a stop in the Old Town of Skudeneshavn. There are 225 wooden houses and is one of the best preserved communities in all of Europe. It’s also a popular little Summer town.
Haugesund Holds History In Its Hands
The community of Haugesund and the surrounding area has been essential in the development of Norway as a country. The decisive battle of Hafrsfjord was fought nearby and that battle was the catalyst that help to unify Norway for the first time. In many ways, this makes Haugesund part of Norway’s birthplace and that is a cause to celebrate!
You won’t typically want to leave the waterfront to celebrate, but visiting To Glass is definitely one reason to go. It’s a wine bar and restaurant all rolled up into one fantastic package that serves tapas and local seafood dishes. Our recommendation? Make sure to order the mussels that have been steamed in white wine and are served with a light focaccia
Finish off your visit with a journey down the Viking Trail Tour. With 5 distinct trails to explore and some of them guided, you’ll get the chance to enjoy waterfalls, fjord views, and a look at the settlement history of the area
What could Haugesund provide you with your upcoming holiday? Incorporate these plans with your own and you’ll be certain to have a fantastic time on your next adventure!
