Travel to Genk

Genk is one of those communities were cultures collide, fusing together into a beautiful melting pot of opportunity. More than half of the city’s residents come from outside of Belgium and nearly 100 different nationalities are represented. It may be a hard-working industrial city on the Albert Canal, but Genk is also a city that is steeped in the history of the region.

It is believed that Genk was originally founded as a Celtic village. A small, wooden church from the 10th century can still be found in the village and the first official mention of it comes from a 12th century document.  Over the years, Genk grew as a community of artisans and writers, but that changed in 1901 when large coal deposits were found.

The history of Genk and the surrounding region is celebrated every summer at Bokrijk, which is an open-air museum that allows visitors to explore 17th century buildings that were relocated to this location. Actors re-enact various events from the history of the city and region, bringing life to the history that is celebrated here.

Genk is also an excellent gateway city for those who wish to explore Hoge Kempen National Park, which first opened in 2006. You can also visit some of the older coal mines and the buildings that helped to provide the financial foundation for the city for several generations. Genk may be an industrial city, but its nickname is “The Green City.” You will find it to be a beautiful, peaceful place where you can find a wonderful way to relax.
