Freiburg im Breisgau, or just Freiburg, is located in southern Germany and was initially founded to be a free market town in the 12th century by Konrad and Duke Bertold III of Zahringen. It’s a strategic community, placed right in the middle of the trade route between the Mediterranean and North Seas, plus at the conjunction of the Rhine and Danube.

Right at the foot of the Black Forest, Freiburg is a cheerful, bright community that offers a medieval, almost fairy tale experience to every visitor. With a strong student population, you can bet the nightlife in this community will be fun! Do your holiday plans include Freiburg im Breisgau? If they do, then here are a few ideas for you to include with your upcoming time away.

The Monster of Freiburg Is a Münster

There are few churches that are as impressive as the Münster in Frieburg. It’s an 11th century masterpiece that has fine detail work that is rare indeed in the world today. At sunset, the tall spires of this sandstone giant turn to a beautiful scarlet, which is one of the most beautiful views in the city. There are scenes from the Bible along the main portal that have been sculpted into the church and you can’t miss the gargoyles that are perched along the ledges.

The Archaeological Museum in Freiburg im Breisgau is an underrated gem that you’re going to enjoy as well. The park in which it sits is dotted with a number of sculptures and the sandstone villa that contains the museum has a unique charm all its own. It was initially built for the Countess of Colombi in the 19th century and the marble entrance will take you to finds that include Roman artifacts and grave offerings recovered from Celt burial sites

You’ll also want to spend a quiet afternoon exploring the cobbled square of Freiburg, the Rathausplatz. The traditional buildings have the classic chestnut shape and multicolored warmth that makes for a wonderful visual experience. Events are held in the square regularly throughout the year, but exploring on your own for a hidden gem is equally fun.

Freiburg Is a Bastion of Fine Dining

If you love a great fine dining experience, then Freiburg im Breisgau is the place to be! You’ll find a lot of value at Zirbelstube, which offers a beautiful combination of Swiss pine and candlelight for your meal. The menu is straightforward and classic, but you can’t go wrong with the sole and capers or anything that involves truffles. It might hurt your cash reserves a little to enjoy this restaurant, but it is definitely worth it!

For something more adventurous, the Kreuzblume offers a culinary fusion experience that won’t cause you any confusion whatsoever. The flavors of the dishes pop out thanks to additions like lemongrass and beetroot. Mango yogurt as a side is a wonderful option as well, especially if you opt for the cod that they smoke in the restaurant.

Are you planning a holiday in Freiburg im Breisgau soon? Add these items to your itinerary and you’ll be able to experience some of the best this community has to offer!
