Travel to Faro
For many people looking to get away from everything for awhile when the weather is good, Faro is the perfect destination. There are two primary things to do while in Faro: work on your tan and drink a great cocktail. It is known as a resort destination in the Algarve region and isn’t a very large city at all – just 50,000 residents call Faro home. There’s more to this city than just the spectacular beaches and party atmosphere, however, which means a trip here is worthwhile during any season you might want to leave life behind for a bit.
Be Sure To Take In the Algarve Culture First
One of the best ways to begin a visit to Faro is to take some time to explore the Castle of Silves. It is a 13th century Moorish castle that could date as far back as the 8th century. Your basic day ticket to the castle is just a couple of Euros and in return you’ll get incredible views and a unique look at the history of the region. There’s an additional cost for the museum in the castle. Make sure to enjoy the food and shopping opportunities and stick around for the evening medieval festival.
While out and about, be sure to stop for pictures at the fishing village of Olhao. The markets are ever-changing with one exception: freshly caught seafood. Stopping here for a meal should definitely be on your to-do list! You’ll find a variety of options, from seaside dining to the sophisticated tapas that are storming the world in popularity right now. With over 12 hours of sunshine on average throughout most of the season, the time is always right to explore!
Of Course There Are the Beaches…
Faro is at its heart a resort community and caters itself as such. You’ll find a place on the beach, a cocktail in hand, and an active nightlife typical components of a stay here in this community. Watersport rentals are readily available so you can take a jet ski out on the water. Boat rentals are available, as is snorkeling equipment if you’d rather go out for a nice swim. Windsurfing and body boarding are common. When the waves are rolling, the surfers are running out into the water!
If you’re looking for a more secluded way to enjoy the Algarve region or you just don’t feel like the resort atmosphere for a day, then a visit to Praia de Albandeira is in order. It is out of the way, a small beach where no watersports are allowed, but you do get the opportunity to experience the escapism that is available in Faro.
If you’re looking for less of the resort feel to a beach, but want some options for the water, then you’ve got a few other beach options that are available to you:
- Praia do Ancao: This beach is popular with families in particular. Some seating and shade umbrellas are available on this expansive beach that features calm, blue waters. Let the kids run in without worry! Some hiking around the area is available with some limited trails and don’t worry – there’s plenty of space here where you’ll still get some privacy, even on its busiest day.
- Praia do Martinhal: Would you rather focus on the watersports than your tan while lying on the beach? Then the crashing waves that come in during the tide are the perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy the water. Windsurfing is the perfect activity here, but other water activities are also highly encouraged. The beach access is easy, making it the perfect place to take out whatever board you prefer.
- Praia da Amoreira: If land-based adventure is what you seek, then this beach has what you want. Sweeping sands and tidal pools about along this rocky shore, giving you the chance to see sea creatures, do some climbing, or just enjoy a beautiful day in Portugal.
How About a Day on a Deserted Island?
Deserta Island sits just off of the shore from Faro and is easily accessible by ferry. It’s name is reflective of what it is – a completely deserted island. You’ll find beaches and vegetation here and that’s basically it! It is widely regarded as one of Algarve’s natural wonders and great effort has been taken to keep the island in its natural state. There’s only one building of relevance on the island, which is the Estaminé Restaurant.
So why visit a deserted island? How about 11 kilometers of white sand beaches for a start. This gives everyone plenty of space so that they can find their own piece of quiet paradise! Non-motorized watersports are allowed here, and if you happen to get tired of the beach, you can take the wooden gangway to see Portugal’s southernmost point. Enjoy a boat tour, grilled sea bass, and perhaps a glass of wine in this location that is away from the hustle and bustle of Faro all year!
The Ria Formosa Natural Park is accessible by boat and depending on the season will give you the chance to see dolphin pods and several different species of birds. Going in the off-season isn’t always the best time to enjoy this part of Deserta Island, but it can give you the opportunity to further explore this wonderful part of Algarve! Remember to pack out what you might take in before you get on the ferry to leave!
The Algarve is best known for its golf courses, and for good reason. As well as their incredible condition, these greens also happen to be surrounded by some truly beautiful views. Vilamoura is said to have some of the best golf in the country, with the Oceanica resort boasting four top-quality courses. Closer to Faro, you will find the San Lorenzo course which has some of the best surroundings for golf in Europe. Looking out over the Atlantic, these fairways are a part of the Ria Formosa marshland where beautiful pines and birdlife add to the peaceful nature of this green.
Are You Ready To Go To Faro?
Whether you want to relax on a quiet, secluded beach or you’re ready to enjoy the nightlife every night while you work on your tan with a cocktail during the day, Faro has something to offer you. Take the opportunity to explore all of the Algarve region during a visit to this community and you’ll be richly rewarded with incredible cultural experiences, fresh local cuisine, and the chance to let life pass you by, if only for a moment or two.
