Read about and get inspiration for a trip to the city, check for the cheapest flights and hotels in Dresden

Located on the River Elbe near the Czech border, Dresden is a city that may be more famous because of what happened to it then what it contains. At the end of the Second World War, Allied troops bombed the city, completely destroying the city center and forever altering the face of the city itself. Over 25,000 civilians were killed in the bombing runs.

An extensive renovation effort took place and today Dresden is one the European hubs of culture, political influence, and economic diversity. Are you planning a trip to Dresden soon? If you are, we’ve put together a list of essentials for you to consider visiting. Take a look below!

The Museums of Dresden Are World Class

One of the unique museums in Dresden is the Transport Museum, which puts on display different modes of transportation under one roof. The start of the museum tour is grand in itself because it is housed in one of the oldest museum buildings in the city, dating back to the late 16th century. Initially intended to house exhibits about the Saxon Railway, you’ll find several vehicles on display and be able to see other vehicles throughout the city that fall under the auspices of this museum.

As you’re traveling throughout the city, the Hygiene Museum is another interesting forum of science and society that makes it one of the most visited museums in the city. Founded in 1912, at one point the Nazis used this museum to publish and propagandize their ideology, which included eugenics. For the most part, however, the message from this museum is one of public health and there is a regular program of temporary exhibits.

Zwinger Palace Is Perfect On a Beautiful Day

One of the enduring landmarks of this city is Dresden Castle. It was the seat of the royal household since the late 15th century and has been restored several times. The Renaissance, Classical, and Baroque styles of architecture make is a truly unique sight to behold. Across the street from the castle is Zwinger Palace, which is built in Rococo style and serves as a museum complex housing several unique offerings.

The grounds of Zwinger Palace are perfect to stroll as fountains and plenty of green space accompany meticulously cared for lawns and gardens. The name dates back to an ancient term that refers to a defensive wall or inner perimeter and the Palace is actually built on the remains of some of the city’s first defensive measures that were built in the late 12th century. With every footstep and sight you see here, you’re literally taking in 800+ years of history!

Are you ready to visit Dresden? This city has much to offer for those who love to explore the past or experience the present. If you’re looking to the future and a trip here is planned, then take these ideas to include in with your own plans so that you really can experience the essential Dresden for yourself.
