Brugge, or more commony Bruges, is a city that invokes many images of peaceful tranquility when one hears the name. The most immediate image that comes to mind for most is that of one of the city’s many canals, perhaps with the famous belfry in the background as the sun turns the sky into a beautiful purple sunset. Bruges offers visitors a glimpse of much more than just Old World tradition, however, which is why we’ve put together this essential list of experiences to enjoy during a visit to this beautiful city.
Chocolate? Belgium? And a Museum? It Must Be Done!
Everything you ever wanted to know about chocolate can be found in one place here in Bruges at the Choco Story Museum. There might even be more information than you ever cared to know! From the history of chocolate to the processes that are taken to refine it into the elegant substance that is loved worldwide, you can literally walk out of the Choco Story Museum with enough information to begin a career as a choclatier!
It’s not just information that you’ll discover here, however, and that’s why it’s arguably the best chocolate museum in the world today. The aroma will strike you first: it’s a mix of opening up a chocolate bar, baking a chocolate cake, and taking a shower in cocoa powder all in one. There are some fun sculptures to see as you take the tour and you can even speak to chocolate experts about how to better feed your addiction. You’ll also get to feed your addiction with some free chocolate! Just hands off the sculptures, ok?
Take a Swim In the World’s Deepest Indoor Pool
At over 30 meters deep [or 100 feet if you prefer], the world’s deepest swimming pool has a home in Bruges. It’s the perfect opportunity to try diving if you’ve never had the experience before. Why? Because you’ll actually need to don scuba gear in order to touch the very bottom of the pool! Rather than a lifeguard, you’ll have a certified diving instructor on-hand in case you find yourself in some trouble on your very first dive.
Once you’ve gotten wet, then it’s time to explore some of the areas surrounding wetlands. There are numerous adventures and treks that you can take on your own, but we recommend taking a Beaver tour if you happen to have the time. Half day or full day tours are available and you’ll go right on out to the wetlands to see the beavers busy working. With fun facts, photo ops, and the chance to tell as many beaver jokes as you want, it’s a great event for any household to enjoy.
You’re Going To Need To Eat At Some Point, Right?
You can go into virtually any city and enjoy an incredible meal that is cooked to perfection. Bruges in no exception to this, but we recommend dinner with a twist – a 150 foot twist! Believe it or not, the Dinner in a Sky concept is something that travels to different cities around the world every year, stopping for about 3 to 4 weeks in each location. To take in a unqiue perspective of Bruges, you’ll want to plan your trip to the city in June to take advantage of this year’s event.
Here’s how it works: a crane literally lifts your entire tabletop, with you seated next to it, up into the sky. There is a chef that is strapped in with you on a kitchen workstation that gets lifted up with you. Don’t worry – there’s waitstaff that will assist you with your meal as well! All the work occurs inside the table as 22 guests watch the preparations happen right in front of them. Everyone is strapped onto the platform, so as long as you’re fine with heights, you’ll have a magnificent time enjoying a fine view and high cuisine. It’s a 5 course menu and the cost is 250 euros, including tax.
Get Your Fix of Art at the Groeninge Museum
There are many fine art musuems that are worthy of a visit when you get yourself to Bruges, but perhaps the best of them all is the Groeninge Museum. With both permanent and rotating displays, unless you visit the museum on two consecutive days, every trip will offer you a fresh perspective of Belgian and Flemish art. An audio tour is included with the admission price, but you might want to keep your bag at home because locker rentals are mandatory for bags.
The featured artists are Hans Memling and Hieronymus Bosch, plus you’ll find some modern work by artists like Paul Delvaux and Rene Magritte gracing the walls of the 11 rooms this musuem has on display. The rooms are separated based on period and style and allow you to really enjoy local art without having to invest an entire day to make that happen.
If you don’t mind doubling your ticket price, you can purchase a pass at the Groeninge Museum that will get you admission into 4 other museums as well, which is a great way to enjoy a prolonged holiday in this beautiful city.
