Getaway Weekend In Belgrade

After a turbulent and not so beautiful period of the nineties of the last century, the capital of Serbia has now become one of the most attractive destinations for young people from all over Europe. At the confluence of the two rivers: Sava and Danube, Belgrade is located exactly at the crossroads of two civilizations, East and West. It sublimates at the same time the spirit of past time through historical landmarks the city abounds in, but also the new era...

Travel to Belgrade

Located right where the Balkans come together with the Pannonian Plain, Belgrade sits where the Sava and Danube meet. It’s one of the most important locations of prehistoric culture in the world and has a modern history that dates back to the third century BC when the Celts conquered the city. The Romans took it over 400 years later, was settled by the Slavs after the fall of the Empire, and has changed hands numerous times over the years.

It’s in one of the most strategic locations in Europe, which means over the years it has seen over 100 wars and has been destroyed completed over 40 times. This resilience shows with a visit to this city and offers visitors a unique glimpse at local culture in way that no other city is able to duplicate. With numerous festivals and events throughout the year, there is also something incredible to experience in Belgrade.

Belgrade Has Some Magnificent Museums

One of the most unique areas of Belgrade is the Stari Grad, which features a massive collection of different architectural styles that covers over two centuries of history. On your way there, tucked into the Kalemedgan just north of this area, sits the Military Museum. It covers the history of the military in the former Yugoslavia and some of the displays include captured weapons from the Kosovo Liberation Army and rare guns. There are also pieces of a American B2 that was shot down in 1999.

The Military Museum is within the Citadel, which was initially built by the Celtics and then extended into the local flood plain by the Romans. Take some time to explore the battlements, bring your camera along for the views that you’ll see, and be prepared for a surprisingly good time.

To round out your time, make sure to fully explore Skadarska, which offers a cobbled street that is filled with taverns, musicians that stroll along with you, and a number of art galleries to explore. Grab a midday coffee and sandwich at one of the cafes and you’ll see just one example of Belgrade at its finest.

Belgrade Has a Number of Hidden Gems Too

One of the best little hidden gems isn’t much of a secret any more in Belgrade. At Little Bay, you’ll get to experience a number of traditional European menu items, from a traditional English roast on Sundays to salmon in a classic tarragon sauce. You’re not coming to Little Bay just for the food, however, because your table also doubles as an opera box. As you dine, you’ll be serenaded with operatic melodies for a truly unique experience.

For a unique experience to enjoy part of Belgrade’s nightlife, the Andergraund is definitely the place to be. It was initially built to be an air raid shelter and was then converted into a mushroom farm before becoming a club. There’s live music on Saturday, a big crowd for virtually any sporting event, and offers reasonable prices.

What could you find to do in Belgrade? Let these suggestions round out your plans today so that you can experience the essentials of this city in your own unique way.

What to see and do in Belgrade ?

‘’Splavovi’’

“Splavovi” have become a true attraction in the capital of Serbia in recent years. In the beginning, those were quite ordinary restaurants on the water, where the traditional Serbian music was played and fish dishes were served. However, over time, “splavovi” became a status symbol. People with “deeper” pockets started meeting there and the whole entourage of “friends” came with them, to make the atmosphere more interesting. “Splavovi” have experienced expansion when the Serbian jet set proclaimed them as their natural habitat. Basically, the prices on these floating clubs are very high – the rent of the booth only reaches the amount of average Serbian salary. However, the time spent here is unforgettable, which thousands of tourists from all over the world, who return here every weekend, can confirm.

Skadarlija

Skadarlija is the bohemian quarter in the center of Belgrade. Every day more than 20,000 people pass by here. Skadarska Street is located in the very city center, near the Republic Square. Due to the proximity of the National Theatre many actors lived there in the late 19th and early 20th century, and together with them other artists, painters, writers and poets were of course welcome. It is a known fact that the actors do not eat before the show, so the opportunity for a little refreshment comes only after the show, and this is most likely the reason, the Skadarlija flourished with many taverns, which are now among the oldest restaurants in Belgrade, antique look of the street, with the cobblestone road which was not changed to the day. Still famous taverns of Skadarlija are: Tri Šešira (The Three hats), Ima dana (There are days), Dva Jelena (The Two Deer). This is where newlyweds come for a meal and entertainment after the ceremony. Of course, local and international delicacies can be found here.

Knez Mihajlova

Knez Mihailova Street, the pedestrian area and the shopping zone, is protected by law as one of the oldest and most valuable landmarks of the city, with a number of representative buildings and urban houses built at the end of the ‘70s of XIX century. It is believed that the center of Singidunum settlement was here at the time of the Romans and at the time of the Turks in this part of town was filled with meandering streets with gardens, fountains and mosques. Knez Mihailova is a Belgrader’s favorite place for a promenade. In the sumertime queues of people who walk on by slowly from Terazije to Kalemegdan, enjoying the shop windows and the songs of many musicians, who are trying to lure some money from people passing by. The street is completely transformed into a pedestrian zone, with a large number of old buildings and houses whose facades will make you feel the spirit of Belgrade at the beginning of the 19th century.

Temple of Saint Sava

One of the biggest attractions of Belgrade is in the municipality Vračar, at the place where the Turks burned the relics of the first Serbian educator and founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church – St Sava in 1595. Temple of Saint Sava is the largest Serbian Orthodox church, the largest Orthodox Church in the Balkans and by the surface and volume the largest Orthodox Church in the world. It is built in the Serbian-Byzantine style, with four 44 meter high towers. Top of the dome is 70 meters high, while the main golden cross is 12 meters high, at the top of the temple and gives an overall height of 82 meters and an altitude of 134 meters (64m above the level of the river Sava). The Vračar plateau in front of the Temple and the Karadjordje’s Park, as well as the National Library which is located within the complex, make this part of Belgrade a special entity and a destination you cannot miss.
