City A - Z
Serving as the capital of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Basseterre is a popular cruise destination and one of the busiest ports in the entire Leeward Islands chain. This has helped the city be able to develop a good selection of stores and dining opportunities along several of the primary streets.
It is also one of the oldest cities in the Eastern Caribbean, founded in 1627 to be the original capital of the colony Saint-Christophe. It has been a large and historically successful port since 1739. Despite its age, Basseterre is a remarkably small town. There are just four main streets that run from east to west, while almost everything visitors could want or need can be found along Fort Street or Bank Street, which run from north to south. The Circus and Independence Square provide access to the older buildings of the city while providing points of interest to explore.
Because of its size, one of the best ways to explore the city is by bicycle. You’ll be able to rent one on Cayon Street for a reasonable price.
Make sure to spend some extra time along the waterfront during your stay in Basseterre. This is where you’ll find open-air shopping that caters specifically to the needs of visitors. Some merchants offer duty-free rates. Batik, which is a form of cloth that can be turned into numerous items or accessories, clothing, and home decorations tend to be the most popular items, but jewelry, native crafts, and other souvenirs are also available.
Then, of course, there are the beaches of Basseterre to enjoy. The weather of Saint Kitts and Nevis is consistently good, which means you’re almost guaranteed to have sunshine during your stay. Pack your favorite swimwear, bring along a towel, and enjoy a peaceful, quiet afternoon.
Although the city and island have a resort atmosphere, you’ll find that there are quiet beaches to enjoy just outside the city. One of the most beautiful is Banana Bay, which offers soft sand, coconut trees that sway in the wind, and pristine waters. For a longer stretch of beach, consider visiting Cockleshell Bay, which offers 3 kilometers of shoreline and views of Nevis to enjoy.
Dieppe Bay, Conaree, and Half Moon Bay are all excellent beaches to enjoy. Dieppe Bay offers a black-sand beach that is protected by a major reef, making it a good spot for snorkeling and swimming.
Trekking adventures are also available in Basseterre with its location near Mount Liamuiga. This stratovolcano offers trails through a dense rainforest that are challenging, but quite rewarding when you reach the summit. A guide is recommended for summiting the mountain.
If you prefer gentle waves to a tough mountain trail, several operators out of Basseterre offer dolphin and whale watching charters, fishing charters, and sightseeing tours.
Basseterre unlocks all the beauty that St. Kitts and Nevis can offer. If you’ve always wanted to explore the Caribbean, this city should be one of your next destinations.
