Albany is situated in the Willamette Valley, just east of Corvallis and is the 11th largest city in Oregon, U.S.A. What strikes you at once about this city is that the old-feel charm of the place has been preserved – all the old homes and vendors’ premises are the same as they were in the 1800s. Although Albany is a large enough city to house a population of 50,000, it is also mainly an agricultural and manufacturing city. Its streets are lined with heritage government and community buildings built in the early 19th Century style.

Some bed and breakfasts were built in the 1840s and you might find they have a limited number of guest suites. What to see and do in Albany, Oregon ?

Albany can be circumnavigated by train – Amtrak Railroad – and Albany Transit runs buses right through the city between dawn and dusk. There are also a few shuttle services – Linn County Shuttle is one – and a bus loop that operates nearly every day of the week.

Surprisingly, there are many things to do in Albany – if not in the city, in its surround. It is within driving distance of major cities like Portland, Columbus and Vancouver. Albany accommodation is amenable, offering lodges, inns and motels close to public transport.

With your booked accommodation as your base, you can discover what there is to do. If you are a food lover, you might want to try one of the vast array of eateries and diners. There is Thai, Chinese, Italian, and of course traditional North American fare. You could find typically huge American breakfasts at very reasonable prices. For the gourmand there are a few delicatessens. You could take a picnic on the beautiful, meandering river that goes through Albany.

If you like the maximum historical experience, it would be fun to take the family to Albany’s Historic Carousel, a wood-sculpting studio and museum. You can watch the artists themselves create mystical creatures and wild animals. The carousel itself is being erected while the building is constructed and the wonderful animals are completed.

Albany is a place you go for a good dose of heritage and history. With its idyllic setting, near a river and lakes, you could definitely find it charming and delightful with all the right touches.
