Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone

One of the most diverse cities in the world is Freetown. Located along the coast in Sierra Leone, it was founded in 1792 by the Nova Scotian Settlers. They were a group of former slaves and free people who decided to create a community that celebrated those who were free or had been freed from slavery. It is the oldest capital of its type in the world today. The best opportunities to explore in the city aren’t usually found in guidebooks...

This coastal African country has tremendous views of the Atlantic Ocean. Bordered by Guinea and Liberia, you’ll find a diverse array of environments awaiting your arrival, including rainforests and savannahs.

It achieved independence from the UK in 1961 and, since then, has put its 100km of coastal belt to good use.

You’ll find that the beaches along the Freetown Peninsula are quite spectacular. Many of them are world-class and several of them are deserted on the average day. You’ll have plenty of room to relax, enjoy yourself, and take in the amazing views. For those looking for a little adventure, consider a trip to Banana Island, where you’ll find snorkeling and diving opportunities are also abundant.

Another option for a stay in Sierra Leone is a tour of Bonthe Town. It is found on Sherbro Island and is a former colonial town for the British. There are several beautiful stone structures that can be found, including religious sites, and the culture is quite fascinating to explore.

Although they can be difficult to reach, try to make your way to the Turtle Islands. They are west of Sherbro and feature shallow waters, white-sand beaches, and traditional fishing villages. Coming together for a drink and a song is a common pastime at night.

You’ll find that a trip to Sierra Leone can be quite wonderful, but there are issues with traffic and disease that require planning. Avoid anyone who represents themselves as a mine manager, operator, or owner as well. With some advanced planning, the magic that Sierra Leone provides can make for a fascinating adventure.
