Southern Africa includes the Cape of Africa and provides one of the longest stretches of coast that the regions of the continent are able to provide.

It is one of the most politically stable regions of Africa and is quite varied from a geographical standpoint. You’ll find thick forests, expansive grasslands, and even a desert biome away from the coastal areas of the region.

There are 5 nations included with the formal designation of this region: Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, and Swaziland. The Southern African Development Community, established in 1980, triples this designation to stretch from DR Congo to the Seychelles.

Some of the primary exports of this region are gold, diamonds, and uranium, which has created a distinctive regional economy compared to the rest of Africa. There are still certain influences that can be attributed to colonialism found here, but there are also distinctive cultural identities that continue to flourish.

South Africa is a major influence on this African region. The GDP of South Africa is often greater than the combined GDP of every other country within the region.
